Maker of Violins, Violas and Cellos

Catherine Violin 2020

The Catherine violin, #73, named for Thurmond's partner, Catherine McMaster, was made in his Glover, Vermont shop in the summer of 2020.  The instrument is modeled after a violin made by Antonio Stradivari in 1716, known as the "Messiah."  The two-piece spruce top is of fine even grain.  The two-piece maple back is highly figured with the maple of the sides matching.  Oil varnish is of a light brown color with gold highlights.  The tone is warm and full, with dark viola-like tones on the bottom end, and a very silvery top end.  Projection is excellent with quick response.  This is an instrument for a soloist or orchestral player.  Sale price: $12,000.
