Maker of Violins, Violas and Cellos

Ruth Violin

Ruth Violin, completed by Thurmond in October, 2002, is modeled after Fritz Kreisler's 1733 Guarnerius del Gesu'.  The top is from spruce cut in 1914 in Canada.  The back is one piece of highly flamed maple from the northern forests of Michigan, cut in 1990.  Inside the instrument, the corner, top and bottom blocks, and linings are from black willow harvested on Thurmond's mother's farm in Green Mountain, North Carolina.  The bass bar and sound post are from spruce taken from a covered bridge in Windsor, Vermont, constructed in 1866.  The Ruth Violin is named in memory of Thurmond's dear Aunt Ruth Atchafalaya Knight Danson.  Ruth was played-in for 6 months by Joyce Hammann, a professional violinist based in New York City, and then purchased by a violinist who wishes to remain anonymous, in Springfield, Illinois.
