16 1/4 inch Bethany Viola modeled after Andreas Amati

The 16 1/4 inch viola made by Thurmond in 1995 and dedicated to his wife, Bethany, is modeled after Andreas Amati's 1676 "Conte Vitale."  The instrument has a full open sound with excellent projection.  Oil varnish.  Rosewood pegs with white pins and ebony collars. Boxwood tailpiece and chinrest.  European maple back and European spruce top, all cut in 1954.  Bass bar and soundpost made with red spruce cut in 1866.

Bethany Viola is owned by Native American performer, Arvel Bird.
