The Catherine III Violin, #79, was made by Thurmond Knight in his Glover, Vermont shop in the summer of 2024. The instrument is modeled after a violin made by Antonio Stradivari. The two-piece spruce top is of wide grain. The two-piece maple back is highly figured with flames traveling downwards from the center join. The maple ribs are of similar flame. Spirit varnish is of a medium red-brown color with gold highlights. The tone is crisp and bell like in the upper registers, full bodied and very warm in the bottom end. Projection is excellent with quick response. This violin is the third one made in honor of Thurmond’s wife, Catherine.
