Strad Model Cello in Progress

Dedicated to my sister, Susan Ellen Knight Helms

The linseed oil required three weeks drying time by hanging the cello in the “sun” (such as it was here in Vermont in May).   Once dry, the colored varnish layers went on and dried quickly.  16 coats of varnish were required to achieve the final color.

Spirit varnish was used, made with a number of gums and resins dissolved in alcohol.  14 hours of hand polishing brought the cello to its present luster.  I dedicated this cello to my sister, Susan Ellen Knight Helms.
